K-Citymarket in Järvenpää, Finland: a combination of a grocery store and a restaurant world led by top chef Matti Jämsen
The K-Citymarket in Järvenpää is a compact hypermarket located in a town of 45,000 citizens, that offers a unique fusion of the restaurant world and the grocery store.
It is the first huge market built in Finland before. The project is developed by Markku Hautala.
K-Citymarket is a modern Finnish hypermarket that offers its customers a wide variety of food and consumer goods and it is known for its best proposals, local selections and food expertise.
From K-Citymarket it is possible to get almost everything a family needs all at once. Its extended range of foods – especially high-quality fresh products, fruits, and vegetables – represents its strong point.
As Markku Hautala said: “The aim is not to sell you as much as possible. The aim is that you wish to come again”.
The store boasts custom-made lights, canvas canopies, digital screens, some nice hand-designed overheads, and some green vertical wall-style décor to give a sense of freshness.
Compared to other hypermarkets, the height of the shelves has been reduced, stockpails are not exhibited, and the aisles have been reduced in half in terms of length.
The end result is a shopping-centricity and a store where customers can enjoy to navigate and shop.
Between the dedicated sections there are: a very charming bakery managed by Finnish bakery and the confectionery supplier Fazer, an excellent fresh fish counter, a meat section composed of a prep room with high-tech machineries, a display table to show the cuts of meat, and the JUICE corner which offers a wonderful range of juicing options, including the pineapple juicing machine, the only one in Finland.
The strong point in this store is no doubt the sushi counter, with a simple and linear design in true Japan’s style. Under the control of a Japanese sushi master with 15 years of experience, the offer is of the highest quality at the lowest prices: this is the reason why the sushi counter of K-Citymarket Järvenpää is one of the biggest sushi sellers in Europe, producing between 800 and 1000 kg sushi per week.
Its uniqueness lies in importing specific Japanese rice to prepare the best product.
